Who is Amnesty Ghana?
Amnesty International Ghana is part of Amnesty International’s global movement of more than 10 million members and supporters working to build a world where everyone can enjoy their human rights. United by our shared humanity, we believe that the power to create positive change lies within all of us. We are funded by our members and supporters, which enables us to remain independent of any political ideology, economic interest, or religion. We stand alongside victims of human rights violations, whoever they are and wherever they are.
Established in 1973, Amnesty International Ghana marked the beginning of a movement dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights across the country. Since its inception, the organization has been driven by a strong commitment to social justice, equality, and human dignity. Through pioneering campaigns, advocacy initiatives, public education, and grassroots engagement, Amnesty International Ghana has built a strong presence and contributed significantly to advancing human rights while supporting Amnesty International’s global mission and vision.

Our Mission
Pursuant to the mission of AI, AI Ghana’s mission is to create a viable and sustainable nationwide membership with a view to champion the course of and promotion of Human Rights and beyond.
Amnesty International Ghana, despite humble and challenging beginnings, has continued to shine brightly. We have evolved from having only one staff member in 1996 to boasting over 6000 members and 594 groups across Ghana, along with a growing team of individuals dedicated to protecting human rights in Ghana. Through meticulous research and unwavering campaigns, we’ve been instrumental in addressing human rights abuses in Ghana. We have led the way in advocating for issues such as sexual and gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive rights for Ghanaians, and most notably, the abolition of the death penalty in Ghana, among other critical human rights concerns.
