Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all.
We are funded by members and people like you. We are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. No government is beyond scrutiny. No situation is beyond hope.
Few would have predicted when we started that torturers would become international outlaws. That most countries would abolish the death penalty. And seemingly untouchable dictators would be made to answer for their crimes.

WHAT DOES AMNESTY DO?
We investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen.
We lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law.
By telling the powerful stories of the people we work with, we mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline.
We support people to claim their rights through education and training.

Where it all began
The formation of Amnesty International Ghana in 1973 was a significant milestone in Ghana’s history. It marked the beginning of a movement dedicated to standing up for human rights and making sure that everyone had a fair chance in life. And from that moment on, the journey towards a more just and equal society began.
Driven by the dedication and commitment of promoting social justice and advancing human rights efforts in Ghana, Amnesty International Ghana, since its inception, has established its presence through groundbreaking activities, highlighting its mission and vision at the global level.

To ensure that the fundamental human rights and freedoms of all persons are protected, promoted, and fulfilled in line with national, regional, and international human rights standards.
Our Mission
Pursuant to the mission of AI, AI Ghana’s mission is to create a viable and sustainable nationwide membership with a view to champion the course of and promotion of Human Rights and beyond.
Who We Are
Amnesty International Ghana is a movement of over 6,000 passionate individuals who are effortlessly working together to create a country where human rights are enjoyed by all, regardless of age, status, and sexual orientation. A movement standing up for those whose rights are being violated and working to ensure that their rights are not infringed upon. Aligned with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we uphold the belief that every person is entitled to fundamental rights and freedoms, including the right to life, liberty, and security of person.
The journey for AI Ghana continues unwaveringly in our commitment to the protection and promotion of the human rights of Ghanaians. As the leading human rights organisation in Ghana for 50 years, we acknowledge the progress we have made and remain even more committed to doing more to safeguard and advance human rights for all. We firmly believe that it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.
Amnesty evolves
Over the years, human rights have moved from the fringes to centre stage in world affairs.
Amnesty has grown from seeking the release of political prisoners to upholding the whole spectrum of human rights. Our work protects and empowers people – from abolishing the death penalty to protecting sexual and reproductive rights, and from combatting discrimination to defending refugees and migrants’ rights. We speak out for anyone and everyone whose freedom and dignity are under threat.
