Media Engagement

Amplifying Human Rights Through Responsible and Strategic Communication

Media engagement is a vital part of Amnesty International Ghana’s work to raise awareness, influence public discourse and ensure that human rights concerns receive the attention they deserve. By working with journalists, editors, broadcasters, digital media platforms and other communication stakeholders, AIG seeks to strengthen public understanding of human rights issues, amplify the experiences of affected people and encourage informed discussion about the responsibilities of institutions and decision-makers.

The organisation’s media engagement combines media relations, public statements, interviews, press releases, journalist engagement, digital storytelling and the dissemination of research and campaign materials. These approaches help translate complex human rights concerns into information that is accessible to the public and relevant to national conversations. They also provide opportunities for AIG to present evidence, communicate recommendations and respond to developments that affect the protection and fulfilment of human rights in Ghana.

AIG recognises that journalists and media practitioners play an important role in documenting violations, informing public debate and holding institutions accountable. Its engagement with media professionals therefore includes efforts to strengthen understanding of human rights principles, improve reporting on human rights issues and encourage responsible, accurate and sensitive coverage. Training and engagement with journalists and media editors help build professional capacity to report on human rights concerns with greater context, accuracy and awareness of the rights and dignity of people affected.

Media engagement is particularly important when addressing issues that are misunderstood, stigmatised or insufficiently discussed in public. Through research dissemination, interviews, press engagements and public education, AIG works to bring attention to issues such as witchcraft accusations, the death penalty, gender-based violence, digital rights and freedom of expression. By grounding its communication in evidence and human rights standards, the organisation seeks to challenge harmful narratives, correct misconceptions and encourage public scrutiny of practices that undermine human dignity.

The organisation also uses audiovisual and digital communication to reach audiences through formats that reflect changing media habits. We All Dey Inside, AIG’s human rights education series, provides a platform for accessible conversations on human rights issues, bringing together perspectives and experiences that can deepen public understanding. Campaign videos, online discussions, social media content and digital storytelling further allow AIG to engage audiences who may not encounter human rights information through traditional media.

AIG’s media work supports its wider advocacy objectives. Public communication can help create awareness of a human rights concern, explain why action is needed and direct audiences towards petitions, educational resources, public events or other opportunities to participate. Media coverage can also extend the reach of research findings and advocacy recommendations, ensuring that they are available to a broader public and relevant stakeholders.

Effective media engagement requires more than generating coverage. It involves communicating accurately, protecting the dignity and safety of affected people, presenting evidence responsibly and making human rights information understandable without losing its substance. AIG therefore seeks to maintain constructive relationships with media practitioners while preserving its independence and commitment to human rights principles.

The importance of media engagement lies in its ability to connect evidence with public understanding. When human rights issues are accurately reported and widely discussed, people are better equipped to understand the challenges facing their communities, question harmful practices and demand accountability. Responsible media coverage can also help create an environment in which affected people are heard and human rights concerns are treated with the seriousness they deserve.

Through strategic media engagement, Amnesty International Ghana works to strengthen public dialogue, amplify human rights concerns and contribute to a more informed society in which freedom of expression, access to information and accountability are valued and protected.
