Amnesty International Ghana celebrated International Women’s Day on 8th March 2022 at Adawso in the Eastern Region. There were 120 participants made up of the Queen mothers of Adawso traditional area, the Presbyterian Women Association-Adawso, some Basic and Junior High School students, a singing band, and the media. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” aimed at advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster reduction. The theme has a bold liaison with Amnesty International’s global Priorities 2 (Equality and Non-discrimination), Goals 5, 10 and 13 of SDGs, and provisions in the Universal Declaration of Human rights Participants had a discourse on the importance of gender equality and the role of women in our communities. The celebration climaxed with a tree-planting exercise by participants in commemoration of the theme.
