AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL’S MEETING WITH THE NEWLY APPOINTED ATTORNEY GENERAL AND MINISTER OF JUSTICE OF GHANA

On 24th February 2025, Amnesty International Ghana met with the Newly appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice  of Ghana Honourable Dominic Ayine to discuss a number of Human Rights issues we are concerned about and to called for swift actions in ensuring the protection and promotion of Human Rights in Ghana.

Amongst the topical issues were an appeal to the president of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama through the office of the Attorney General to commute all death Sentences to life imprisonment and a step in the right Direction for Ghana to sign the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the abolition of the death Penalty.

We reiterated the need for a review of the Public Order Act through parliament to ensure that the rights of protestors are respected and protected.

On prison improvement, we highlighted the need for progress of the community service sentencing Bill which will help decongest the prisons in Ghana.

On Championing Women’s rights, we sought to find out the steps the current government will be taking to ensure that the Bill is signed into law since its passing in parliament in July 2024.
