Name of the Artwork: Purity
Description
‘Purity’ is a surreal digital artwork I made using the Procreate app on iPad.
In every one of my paintings, I emphasize on the innermost feelings, thoughts and beliefs of Women like myself , what animates us, while we go about our daily routines.
I depict this in Purity by painting a section of the human skeleton, the pelvis, thigh and leg bones. With the pelvis being the main part that supports the abdomen (uterus, ovaries .etc.) where the process that leads to menstruation occurs.
This is to draw attention to the fact that Menstruation is a normal bodily function like respiration or digestion, hence breaking the taboos about menstruation. Also, menstrual blood is not dirty, it is just like blood from any other part of the body.
To combat period poverty, the need for support during menstruation cannot be overemphasized. Support in the forms of education on how to manage menstrual pain, tracking individual menstrual cycles and access to the menstrual hygiene products of choice should be available for all.
I highlighted this in Purity by illustrating an older woman (could be a guardian or an educator), nurturing some rose flowers growing out of a young girl’s head. This is a representation of passing down the right information and resources needed.
Their poise is one that depicts a dependable leader and a follower ready to learn and unlearn, a depiction of this year’s theme, “Together for a periodfriendly Ghana.”
The roses are uneven in size as a symbol of the difference in blood flow during menstruation, with various period hygiene products to choose from.
The calendar is a little guide to tracking individual menstrual cycles effectively in order to be ready for when it comes and to not be taken by surprise because that can lead to staining one’s dress or beddings.
Also, the phone is a reminder of the fact that there are many apps that can also give further resources that have to do with the menstrual cycle in general.
A bin in the lower right side of the room is a reminder on the importance of observing proper sanitation during menstruation.
This is a surreal celebration of Menstrual hygiene day and Women as a whole when it comes to menstruation.
