Our Interns’ Journey

Volunteering at Amnesty International Ghana

By : Derick Kofi Owusu Danso

My six-month journey as a volunteer Administrative Assistant at Amnesty International Ghana was both fulfilling and transformative. Joining such a renowned organization was an opportunity I approached with enthusiasm, and it proved to be a profoundly impactful experience.

From the beginning, I fully engaged in the role by managing correspondence, organizing records and supporting the team’s daily operations. My primary focus was to ensure smooth workflows, allowing the dedicated staff to concentrate on their vital mission of promoting human rights.

Helping to organize a major advocacy event at Amnesty International Ghana was one of my most memorable experiences. Although managing logistics and communicating with stakeholders was challenging, it was highly rewarding to see the event succeed through the team’s collective hard work. This experience showcased my ability to handle complex tasks and reinforced my commitment to the organization’s mission.

I learnt so much about the field of human rights advocacy throughout my time there. The skills I honed along with the knowledge I acquired have equipped me for future challenges and opportunities in my career. This experience not only strengthened my passion for creating positive change but also deepened my appreciation for the crucial work done by Amnesty International Ghana.

As I look back on this rewarding chapter, I am grateful for the chance to contribute to such an important cause and am excited about applying what I’ve learned to future endeavours.

Interning with Amnesty International Ghana gave me a reason to Dream. As a student exploring my career path, my time with the Amnesty team was transformative.

It not only enhanced my existing skills but also helped me develop new ones, such as project coordination, advocacy, and effective communication. My passion for human development, especially in areas like gender equality, education, and social justice aligned perfectly with Amnesty International’s mission to defend and promote human rights.

This experience set a clear path for me to pursue a career in the human development space, focusing on creating positive change for all.

I would rate my time with Amnesty International Ghana as a 10/10 minus nothing 🤭, as it profoundly shaped my career aspirations and strengthened my commitment to advocacy and human rights.
