Amnesty International Ghana congratulates the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, on his resounding victory in the Presidential elections held on December 7, 2024. This achievement reflects the trust and confidence Ghanaians have placed in his leadership.
We also commend the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Dr Mahamadu Bawumia for demonstrating exemplary maturity and leadership by conceding early in the race. Such actions strengthen Ghana’s democratic values and set a positive precedent for political engagement.
Amnesty International Ghana acknowledges the human rights priorities outlined in the document, “Mahama’s First 120 Days Social Contract.” We are particularly encouraged by the focus on addressing issues such as corruption, relief for flood victims, and improving health rights for young girls.
Specifically, we welcome the announcement of the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools. This aligns with Amnesty International Ghana’s recent menstrual hygiene campaign advocating for more affordable sanitary products, and we see this as a significant step toward improving access and equality.
We also applaud the allocation of seed funding to establish the Women’s Development Bank, a critical initiative for advancing women’s rights and empowering women economically across Ghana.
Furthermore, we demand the reopening of investigations into unresolved criminal cases, including those related to the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, and the murders of Ahmed Hussein-Suale and Silas Wulochamey. Amnesty International Ghana has long called for justice in these cases, particularly for Ahmed Hussein-Suale, and we welcome efforts to bring closure and accountability.
Amnesty International Ghana is a member of the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) and according to its recent reports there have been pockets of violence during and after the elections which have resulted in the destruction of property, injury and even death of individuals. Amnesty International Ghana condemns all forms of violence and urges the government, and political parties to come together and resolve disputes through lawful means. We also call on the Police to enforce law and order. Nobody should die for coming out to exercise their right to vote as citizens of this country.
Amnesty International Ghana remains committed to working with the incoming government to promote and uphold human rights across the country. Together, we can advance equality, justice, and dignity for all Ghanaians.
